What are the qualities tha make a Grand Master ?? Or even a Master for fact. Is it how good you fight, or is it about how good of a human being you are ?? Is it how long youve studies or is it how many trophies youve earned?? Is it what youve done for others or what youve done TO others?? Lets talk about it.

During my training i have studied several diffrent styles of martial arts and always stay with Kempo, because Kempo fits well into every martial style. The flow and aggression of Kempo can only add to any martial art and you can call it what ever you choose but if it's root is Kempo well....... you make the call.

Sometime I appreciate the hybrid style of Kempo, but sometimes I despise it because it is such a stylistic mess. I have been researching the differences between Parker Kenpo and Villari Kempo and It appears to be a huge difference in the way the masters move. I think Parker style is a bit closer to the original than Villari Kempo. I also found out that the Chow style didn't have any Katas, this has led me to ask many questions about Kempo and Kenpo.

There is no "self " in the Martial Arts, there is only the Martial Arts ...Well said. For us as teachers there is only one most important thing , "our students" and a big part of our responsibility to them is to stay true in our own character. CHARACTER: The total sum of the qualities making up an individual: moral excellence. How can this be done by lying about our own rank , What will happen when the student finds out? It will make the student lose faith in his teacher. These masters may have lost their way along the way or maybe they themselves watched their instructors do the same thing, and they think it is the only way one goes about high ranking. Most of these people ( grandmaster so and so) don't train with anyone who could go about promoting them the right way in any case. More truth is that when stuff like this happens it leaves even the good guys questioning the rank that they earned from these people. What would happen if a guy (4th Dan) jumped up to his 8th Dan rank and then his 9th the next year. This happened here in Mass. The sad part is that he did not rank himself it was done by an another GM here in the New England area. While I am sure it was hard for the 4Th Dan to say "thanks but no thanks" it goes to show how thighs happen here in USA. What will his student say or feel .... " wow my master must be really good"... I don't think so. I would have to feel bad for the students.

I have many fav's but, the Hubud Lubud ( tying and un-tying ) drill is in the "Top 5" of my fav. to teach our students and do myself with my "Training Buds". It gives the energy.... that you need to flow, there is no stoping, and you can do it so many ways ... Hubud Lubud Drill with Knife in IcePick Grip (pukal) is alot of fun. So what's your fav???

Hey Sensei Kevin,
I also like Hubud for empty hand applications. I find it to be a great drill for training various Chin na techniques on the short bridge while flowing. One of my favorite drills for the Filipino arts is De Cadena "trapping hands" it is a great platform to use for all your techniques. If you can do a technique in De Cadena then every where else is easy. I actually have my students do their Ping te combinations from trapping hands once they know it well enough to be competent in its usage.

Hello Everyone,
In my school in Amesbury one part of my sparring regimen is The Kyokushin style sparring. I do alot of full body conditioning every class with my students, at each rank the level of conditioning increases. I find that this process actually fires up our fighting spirit. I always teach that we are training not to get hit, but if we do take a hit, we are conditioned. When we spar full contact the rules are no one can run away (this is close quarter practice), can't hit the face except for kicks, or wear protective padding. Padded sparring is for when we do hit the face with everything not just kicks. I find this type of sparring helps to slow the game down a bit since no one is panicking about getting punched in the face, just kicked. I also find that it helps to set up a better body defense and is a little more realistic in terms of power and speed when throwing and receiving body blows. What types of sparring do you do in your school?
